AMPOWER at NTU: Exploring Hydrogen Beyond Renewables

When the lights stay on, most of us don’t think about what makes it possible. But behind the scenes… the equation is getting harder to solve. AI and data centers are driving electricity demand to new heights. Solar and wind collide with land disputes, fragile ecosystems, and the limits of weather, restricting their widespread deployment.

Most people still picture generators as just diesel engines, and view the industry through media focused on high-tech and semiconductors while overlooking the power systems that sustain them. But as AMPOWER Sales Engineer Tiger Tang reminded students of the Graduate School of Advanced Technology at National Taiwan University, power systems are the unseen backbone of the high-tech industries they admire.

His focus wasn’t on distant breakthroughs, but on a solution already deployable: hydrogen. The universe’s first element and its most abundant, hydrogen makes up 75% of all matter among the stars. On Earth, it endures as the essence of water, the spark of life, and the unseen thread of our world. As an energy source, it can be drawn from other renewables or natural gas, demonstrating safety, versatility, and reliability.

Fuel cells take hydrogen’s potential further: compact, scalable systems that quietly deliver dependable backup and baseload power where intermittent renewables fall short. Tang highlighted how this momentum is already at work, especially in AI-driven sectors like semiconductors and data centers, proving that generators and power systems go far beyond emergency use.

The broader lesson from this lecture is clear: operational resilience depends on diverse, flexible, and high-efficiency energy solutions. Through industry–academia collaboration, AMPOWER brings these lessons directly into the classroom, helping students see real-world challenges while inspiring the next generation of innovators.

As Tiger Tang reflected, “Through campus talks, not only do we spark curiosity about the energy sector, but also nurture future leaders who will drive its transformation. It also opens the door to share AMPOWER’s values and culture—attracting bright young talent eager to shape the future of power.”
