Planting Roots, Growing Together: AMPOWER Nurtures Hope in the Forest

On a crisp November morning in Yilan County’s Hanxi Village, a group of AMPOWER colleagues and their families gathered at the edge of the forest—hearts, boots, and shovels at the ready to plant 100 young Litsea cubeba (馬告, Taiwan mountain pepper) trees.

The village, home to the Atayal indigenous people, blends Japanese and Atayal linguistic heritage and is composed of four communities: Hanxi, Sifanglin, Huaxing, and Xinguang. Nestled near Luodong Creek, it offers a serene landscape framed by mountains and forest.

Words, Songs, and Movement

The day began with a gentle welcome. Local hosts taught us a few Atayal words, led cheers and welcome songs, and guided us through traditional dance steps. The gestures and sounds were simple yet meaningful, offering a glimpse into daily life, values, and stories that have been passed down through generations.

Walking Through Living History

From the village center, we followed winding roads to places that have watched generations grow: the century-old church, the elementary school, the remains of an old shrine, and the iconic Hanxi Suspension Bridge.

Along the way, the guides introduced native plants, explained their role in the local ecosystem, and shared how the land and people have shaped one another over generations.

Folding Tradition into Every Meal

After we were back from exploring, we then learned how to make a Hunter’s Rice Pack: meals traditionally prepared to nourish hunters, lovingly prepared by village mothers.

Its ingredients were simply prepared but full of flavor: steamed glutinous rice filled with savory ingredients like salted pork, salted fish, and bamboo shoots. We learned how to fold the cinnamon leaves around them and tie it securely. It was a delectable meal!

The Tree That Connects Generations

The mountain pepper tree is more than a native plant. To the Atayal people, it represents flavor, healing, and heritage; it enriches the soil, prevents erosion, and sustains the village’s small-scale economy.

Guided by a local forestry partner, AMPOWER team learned its life and rhythm—how it blooms, bears fruit, and anchors the soil. On every young tree, we placed a handwritten note with our hopes—for our earth, our company, or future—wishing them strength to grow through every challenge.

Alongside the grove, we placed a wooden plaque engraved with the company’s name, as a symbol of enduring care and commitment towards sustainability and responsibility.

Together, We Grow 🌱

Sustainability often begins with grand plans and policies, but its heart lies in small, honest actions—like placing a sapling into the soil and realizing that it will do so much more in its long lifetime, restoring the land in quiet ways.

To everyone who joined, guided, and welcomed us—thank you!

And to every young mountain pepper tree taking root under the Hanxi sky: may you grow tall and strong, carrying our shared hope for a greener, kinder world.
