Natural Gas CHP System: From Crisis to Sustainability

At a recent Cabinet press conference, it was revealed that northern Taiwan faces a severe power shortage with a 20 billion kWh supply-demand gap, prompting the government to import power from central and southern regions. This shortage impacts various industries, including healthcare. In response to this crisis, AMPOWER has made significant strides in aiding Shin Kong Hospital with its energy challenges, making them the first hospital to pass the greenhouse gas inventory.

Power Outages and Infrastructure: Recent Cases and a Deep Dive

It is concerning that cities still experience frequent and widespread power outages. In less than a week, several incidents have frustrated citizens, especially in the city of Taoyuan. One of the most recent incidents occurred on June 26, 2024, during a heavy thunderstorm in the Daxi and Fuxing districts. Lightning struck the Fu’an Substation, leading to a complete shutdown of its feed lines. This event disrupted supply downstream to the Ronghua Substation, leaving approximately 22,421 households without electricity and sparking frustration among residents.

On June 12, 2024, the environmental disclosure organization CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and Cathay United Bank co-hosted an ESG forum. The forum focused on the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), sharing insights on climate and natural risks, and highlighting key points for SMEs to consider when executing environmental disclosures. Metal Industries Research & Development Center also shared its expertise on carbon inventory and carbon reduction technology applications.

However, this industry’s key players all around the world face the same challenge: promoting sustainable development while boosting corporate revenue growth. With the public’s increasing demand for environmental protection, the concept of a circular economy has been spreading globally. Thus, this “zero waste” concept puts pressure on all enterprises. For the semiconductor industry, the challenge lies in how to recycle silicon, which is the main waste component of production. Usually, the silicon slurry is incinerated without being reused.

Department of Civil Engineering at National Cheng Kung University

On the 17th of May, AMPOWER was invited to the Department of Civil Engineering at National Cheng Kung University to deliver a special lecture for master’s and doctoral students. Our General Manager, Calvin Chen, presented on the topic of resilient emergency power systems for semiconductor factories. He provided the students with detailed insights into the electrical grid architecture, backup power construction methods, ventilation, seismic protection, and future industry prospects.
